Striking and Playing Fish
Striking is the term used to describe the action of setting the hook in the fish when you get a bite. It is not usually necessary to do more than move the rod swiftly back a few inches with a flick, but when fishing at range, or if there is a lot of slack line between you and your tackle, you may need to strike with a sweeping action to pick up the slack line and make contact with the fish.

Float Fishing on Stillwaters
When float fishing on lakes and canals the float is attached to the line at the bottom using shot. This is known as 'bottom only'. More sensitive floats are required than for river fishing, as the fish alone is responsible for pulling the float down in the water as there is no current, so floats with thin tips, sometimes inserted into a thicker body are used.

Coarse Fishing Casting Techniques
There are two main casting techniques that you will need to master, the overhead cast, and the underarm cast. There are no hard and fast rules about which cast you should use for a given situation and you will quickly develop your own style, but in general terms you would use the overhead cast when you need to cast a long distance, and the underarm cast when long distance casting is not required, and you are fishing with tackle that could easily tangle if you used an overhead cast, such as a stick float rig.

Floats For River Fishing
Generally speaking there are two ways to float fish on a river depending on the distance you need to cast in order to reach the fish and you need a range of floats to fish a variety of conditions successfully. If you do not need to cast a long distance to reach the fish, you will usually attach the float at both the top and bottom by means of plastic or silicon tubing.

In the Northern parts of the country in March, our waters are around the forty-degree mark, give or take. As anglers, we will have to do some work to find the bass. Float Fishing on Rivers
When float fishing on rivers you will usually attach the float to the line using silicon or plastic tubing placed at both ends of the float. This is known as 'top and bottom' or 'double rubber'. Shot is then attached to the line between the float and the hook, either spaced out or in bunches so that only the tip of the float is visible above the water. The tackle is then swung out into the stream and allowed to float down the river with the current.
